How TAI can help you manage your bowels

Wondering how Peristeen® can help you? Learn the basics of how this well-documented bowel emptying technique can help you manage your chronic or reoccurring bowel problems.

Sarah was born with Spina bifida. “Peristeen has given me control of something I have never had control of. I know how long the procedure takes for me now.”

There is a better way to go

The Peristeen transanal irrigation system is an effective treatment option if you’re suffering from faecal incontinence or chronic constipation. It can help relieve your condition and give you improved quality of life.

Transanal irrigation (TAI) is a simple and easy procedure designed to clean a portion of the bowel. It allows you to take a proactive approach to managing your bowels, consequently giving you more control over your bowel movements and preventing faecal incontinence and constipation.

Peristeen and transanal irrigation: what you need to know

Transanal irrigation is a procedure for emptying the bowels and is an alternative to other methods such as laxatives, suppositories, manual evacuation and stimulation.

The Peristeen transanal irrigation system is designed to empty your bowel safely and comfortably. The procedure is performed while sitting on the toilet, with the user introducing lukewarm water (between 36-38°C) into the rectum using a rectal catheter.

When the appropriate amount of water is introduced to the colon it softens the stool, causing faeces to move onwards in the bowel and empty into the toilet along with the water. The water volumes are bespoke to the individual and Peristeen will fully or partially empty the descending colon depending on the water volumes tolerated by the individual. Note that the water bag has a maximum capacity of 1 litre. Transanal irrigation effectively cleans the bowel through mass movement of stools, thereby preventing faecal incontinence and constipation.
