Are you ready for the airport?
For many, packing and navigating the airport can be difficult when travelling with a stoma. But a little planning can make this easier.
Packing tips with Heylo
Always give yourself plenty of time to pack before heading to the airport. When travelling with Heylo, you will need to remember to pack your:
- Transmitter (likely wearing)
- Charger
- USB cable
- Sensor layers for the duration of your trip
- Phone with the Heylo app installed
In addition, remember to pack enough ostomy bags and supporting products. Research where you are going and make sure you will have access to a USB charging port. You may need to take a travel adaptor with you so you can charge the transmitter whilst away from home.
Packing Heylo in your carry-on rather than hold luggage may also be a good idea. This way, if your baggage is delayed, you will still be able to charge the transmitter and continue using Heylo whilst you wait. If you are away for a while and carrying a lot of ostomy bags in your hold luggage, split them across different suitcases to further minimise the risk.
Getting through security with Heylo
You should remove your transmitter from the sensor layer before going through security. It is possible your Heylo solution is questioned, so try to be prepared to explain your situation. You can use your handy Heylo card to help identify yourself as having a medical condition which requires these products. This may make it easier to explain. For more information or to request a Heylo travel card, contact the Heylo Support Team.
If you are carrying additional ostomy products in your hand luggage such as elastic tape or adhesive remover, check local regulations regarding liquids. A doctor’s note may be needed to justify these products in your hand luggage.
How will Heylo help me when travelling?
When travelling, the Heylo app will allow you to discretely check the status of your baseplate, helping to reduce the fear of leakage when you are in an unfamiliar setting. With instant notifications, your Heylo solution will allow you to act and avoid a full leakage. This will help you to have the confidence to explore the world as you wish and not miss out on those special experiences.

Some people like to ensure they have recently changed their stoma bag and baseplate before arriving at an airport and taking a long flight. This can provide an additional feeling of control over their bowel when in a place where toilet accessibility is a little more limited. You may wish to discuss additional precautions like this with a member of the Heylo Support Team (tel: 0800 220 255 or email heylouk@coloplast.com) or your nurse or doctor prior to travelling.
Get the most out of Heylo when travelling
Remember these simple points to get the most out of your Heylo solution when travelling:
- Your Heylo app notifies you when it is time for you to charge your transmitter
- It takes approximately 2.5 hrs to fully charge the transmitter, giving you 48-72 hrs of wear time
- Your Heylo transmitter and app work 24/7
Bluetooth® and location sharing should be enabled to get the most out of Heylo. This means that if you turn on airplane mode when flying, make sure Bluetooth® remains active so you stay updated about your stoma. Heylo will automatically detect if Bluetooth® has been turned off, so no need to worry that this is not working correctly.
Always remember, to receive your Heylo notifications, you need power on your phone! When travelling, it is often all too easy to run out of power after snapping your holiday pictures. If you are a heavy user of your phone, consider bringing a power bank so you can always use the Heylo app and stay secure throughout the day, no matter what you are doing.
