What is TAI?

Transanal irrigation (TAI) is a procedure where water is passed through a soft silicone cone or a catheter into the rectum to empty the contents of the lower colon.

How TAI works

The procedure is performed by introducing lukewarm water between 93-104°F into the rectum using a rectal catheter while sitting on the toilet. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the volume of water needed to achieve a full irrigation. As water is introduced into your colon through a rectal catheter, this promotes evacuation of the contents of the lower colon. Water and stool are then emptied into the toilet.
